Fender had produced several guitars by the mid 1970s the Telecaster, Stratocaster, Jazzmaster and Jaguar all very much the same in regards of the solid body and loosely the same shape. However they had only flirted with the Semi Hollow territory dominated by Gibson and Gretsch. Fender had produced the Coronado in the late 1960s and had released three versions of that model from approx 1966 through to 1972. They tried again 1975 when they designed the Starcaster and it went into production in 1976. However like its predecessor it struggled to shake off the solid body heritage. With an off set waist body design and a sweeping 'wave' like headstock design it was as far from the Telecaster as could be imagined. Although it was not the most successful of Fenders designed it has become somewhat of a cult classic. The Starcaster and Coronado's were revived and well received in 2013.
