60 YEARS OF THE FENDER STRATOCASTER 1954 - 2014
In late 1949 Fender had released the Esquire, a single pickup guitar. As the esquire developed it became known as the Broadcaster and featured the now standard double pick up configuration. That guitar went on to become the Telecaster and the rest is history.
In 1954 a baby brother came along for the Telecaster and what a baby brother it was, two horned curved and contured the Stratocaster would become the most famous guitar in history and would be used by artists such as Kimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, hell even George Harrison had one and called it Rocky! Over the years the Stratocaster has come in many different styles and colours but always with the same shape well almost. In no way related to its popularity its headstock got bigger in the 70s as CBS made some changes. SSS, HSS, HH and HSH pickup configurations have come and gone and come back again. It lost a tone knob and its recessed jack plug for a time in the 80s as cost were cut. It has however returned to its rightly place at the top of the guitar tree for many but a remains little behind is older sibling the Telecaster for me!! 2014 is the year of the Strat, enjoy........ |
